Royal Commission Support Service

Relationships Australia Tasmania offers counselling and support service to individuals who experienced sexual abuse as children (under 18) in institutional contexts and people who are affected through their engagement with the Royal Commission, without having been exposed directly to abuse, such as family members of survivors or employees of institutions or organisations where abuse took place.

In November 2012 the government announced a Royal Commission to investigate Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.  The Royal Commission are inquiring into how institutions with a responsibility for children have managed and responded to allegations and instances of child sexual abuse.  The Royal Commission understands that making contact with the Commission can be very challenging for survivors and engaged services to offer them support.   In Tasmania, Relationships Australia Tasmania and Sexual Assault Support Services are in partnership to provide support to individuals who engage with the Royal Commission process.

We support individuals to engage with the Royal Commission process by:

  • Providing information and advice about what to expect from the process
  • Providing accessible information on the Royal Commission process throughout the person’s engagement with the process
  • Case management throughout the process
  • Warm referrals to the Royal Commission and other agencies throughout the process
  • Warm referral to appropriate longer-term therapeutic supports as required
  • Accessing interpreting or cultural translation services as required
  • De-briefing and counselling immediately after giving evidence

Our counselling and support services are often conducted face-to-face, but we also offer telephone and outreach services where appropriate.

We respect your privacy and all information will be kept confidential.  We have no expectation about what information you choose to share with us and you will not be asked to give intimate details about what happened if you do not want to talk about it.

Our services are offered in Hobart, Launceston and Devonport.
