Elder Relationships Services

The Elder Relationship Service is a new mediation and counselling service to support families who need help negotiating complex issues related to aging. The service will be run as a twelve month trial from March 2016 onwards.

Elder Relationship Services can assist older people and their families to:

  • prevent or resolve family conflict;
  • have difficult conversations;
  • plan for the future (including medical, health, financial or living arrangements);
  • resolve differences in ways that improve their relationships; and
  • make decisions that protect the interests, rights and safety of families.

The trial site for the Elder Relationship Services in Tasmania is Launceston.

People can attend on their own, with their partner, or with a support person.

Attending the Elder Relationship Service is voluntary and confidential, within the limits of the law. Everyone gets the opportunity to express his or her view with the support of an independent practitioner. The Elder Relationship Service is staffed by trained mediators and counsellors and with specific skills in delivering services to people experiencing conflict about ageing-related issues.

The decisions made at an Elder Relationship Service sessions are not legally binding.  However, the practitioner can assist to document your agreements in writing.

Making an appointment and fees

Services are subsidised by the Federal Government and clients pay a fee based on family income. We will confirm the service cost at the time of making an appointment.  Any concerns about your ability to pay the fee can be discussed at any stage.

A session usually lasts between one and two hours.  Where more than one person is involved, the practitioner may also wish to see each person separately. Some issues are resolved in a few sessions, others take longer.

No referral is required, and waiting times for an appointment can vary according to the current level of demand and your availability.
